Real estate agents are the backbone of the real estate ecosystem — acting as key mediators between builders and buyers. With the enforcement of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA), it is now mandatory for all brokers and agents to be registered with their respective State RERA Authorities.
Upon registration, every agent is issued a unique RERA registration number, valid for 5 years, which must be quoted in every real estate transaction they facilitate.
Under RERA, agents are also held accountable for the information they provide. Misrepresentation of project details can attract strict penalties — up to Rs. 10,000 per day, and a maximum of 5% of the project cost.
Additionally, every registered real estate agent is required to maintain proper books of accounts and be answerable to the regulatory authority regarding their dealings.
